Tell me about... Vacciago

The wonderful village of Vacciago, where several of the holiday homes are located, is "fascinating in a low key sort of way", as one holidaymaker put it. The older houses have great charm, and many holidaymakers staying in the apartments in the village have remarked how enjoyable it is to stroll through the narrow streets (see photos below) to get fresh bread and provisions in the morning from the village shop (and delicious home-made pasta, a superb selection of cold meats and cheeses, and sometimes the most wonderful home-made savoury tarts...!). It's also wonderful to stroll to the little church of Sant'Antonio in the early evening to admire the fantastic view of the lake and island from its terrace.

Vacciago has more elegant houses and large villas than you would expect for such a small village, their origins going back to a time well-to-do families looked to escape from the cities in the Po plain to get away from it all, and Vacciago, with its clean air, fantastic setting above the wooded slopes of Lake Orta, and superb view of the island and Monte Rosa, fitted the bill nicely! This has left Vacciago with a fantastic architectural heritage - and a tradition of hospitality.

Vacciago has also attracted many artists over the years, including Antonio Calderara. His house and modern art collection are today open to visitors in the Fondazione Calderara, located in the centre of the village.
