Casa Glicine (pronounced CA-ZAH GLEE-CHIN-EH),
which takes its name from the beautiful Wisteria growing on the balconies
(see picture) is a great one-bedroom apartment, arranged on two floors (1st
and 2nd), sleeping two to four people. The apartment is located in
the delightful village of Vacciago ("fascinating
in a low key sort of way" as one holidaymaker put it), some 200 metres in
altitude above the lake, and just 5 minutes by car. The older houses
in the village have great charm, and several holidaymakers staying in the
apartments in the village have remarked how enjoyable it is to stroll through
the narrow cobbled streets to get fresh bread and provisions in the
morning, from the well-stocked local shop (just 20 metres from the Casa Glicine)
which supplies all usual food items.
The apartment has been recently restored, and has two small balconies, from which you can see Lake Orta, and the great snowy mass of Monte Rosa, the second highest mountain in the Alps, looming above the hills. From the nearby terrace of the church of Sant'Antonio, just a stroll away, there is a fantastic view of the lake and island. Also in Vacciago is a modern art collection, the Fondazione Calderara.
There are many possibilities in the area for sightseeing, country/mountain walks (we provide descriptions of some great local walks), lake sports, or just relaxing in wonderfully peaceful surroundings. The area is full of a wide range or trattorias and restaurants, all very reasonably priced. There are several small beaches on Lake Orta. In fact there is everything you would expect for a wonderful vacation rental in Italy!
Upstairs the living room with open-plan kitchen has a double sofa bed, dining table for 4, gas cooker with oven, fridge, kettle and microwave. The small balcony (see picture) has a table with seating for 2 for eating out.
The room downstairs, reached by a spiral straircase, has a double/twin beds, with the original parquet floor, and leads to the bathroom with shower (no bath tub). There is a similar small balcony on this floor too.
Thus the apartment sleeps two to four people. There is no washing machine.
There is parking in a small public parking place, just 50 yards from the house.
Because of its relatively small size, the apartment is very reasonably priced, and represents outstanding value for money as a base in this wonderful area.

Note that the apartment is not suitable for people with mobility problems, because of the internal spiral staircase between the two floors.

For Casa Glicine, arrivals and departures can be any day of the week (minimum stay 3 nights). Arrivals should be after 4.30 p.m., and departures before 10 a.m.
